Las Limpias…. that’s what my DAD called the cotton fields where he grew up working. Yes, Chicanos- Mexican Americans picked cotton. He said he did it for 10 cents an hour and that if you want to be humbled and appreciate life. Go pick cotton and you will realize what hard labor really is. Anyways, Now back to an appreciation for film making. Let me say this first. This movie is not only a VIBE, it’s a masterclass in filmmaking. I am not a horror fan or a fan of vampire flicks. I am a straight up film buff that appreciates world building and character building. What I wasn’t ready for was the construction of a setting based on music and melody. Set in the 1930s Mississippi we have Michael B Jordan acquainting himself once again with the Great Director Ryan Coogler. Michael B Jordan plays a duel role as twin brothers and it is done real well that it was hard to believe there aren’t two Michael B Jordans in existence. Based in the Mississippi Delta we have two brothers returning to their home after making some money in Chicago. They are looking to open a business particularly a Juke Joint for their community. After purchasing the land and a building from a white owner who insists he isn’t part of the KKK. They go out into town to recruit people they are familiar with to help open and work the establishment. One person they want to get to work is their cousin Sammie who has a passion for the guitar and the Blues. Sammie played by Miles Caton who from what it looks like is his first ever job as an actor does a great job. The character Sammie is a young sharecropper who is a son of a local preacher. His father isn’t fond of his music playing especially to drunkards in a bar. He tells his son “You keep dancing with the devil… one day he’s gonna follow you home.” Sure enough the advice from a Father and Holy person with experience was exactly right. I just can’t get over the quality of a world in the South that makes it known that music is a big part of their lives. What makes this movie special is the attention it gives to music and song. There’s a montage in there that blew me away and showed the history of black culture in music. There is a quote in this particular montage that says- ‘There Are Legends Of People With The Gift Of Making Music So True It Conjure Spirits From The Past And The Future.” And BOY DOES IT! What a great scene. Ryan Coogler thank you for being a true artist and showing everyone what artistry really looks like. There is alot of similarities to the plot of the Robert Rodriguez film From Dusk to Dawn. It basically is the same formula but has a different tune from a campy vampire movie to this one that knows exactly what message it wants to say. The Blues isn’t a genre it’s a way of life.
👽 👽👽👽👽 Five Aliens for this sure fire classic.
