The Brutalist. Rated R

What a brutal movie to watch. Of course not because of run time ( 215 minutes ) but of the whole plot of the film. Let’s first off give what is being said about the critical acclaim of this movie. Yes Everything from the acting to the cinematography to the direction is very well done. Adrien Brody within the first few minutes of meeting his character you can automatically see he is bringing his A-Game. My first impression was that we are again going to get another film about a holocaust survivor and their journey through a tough tragic period much to the same story of another Adrien Brody film The Pianist. Which he won an Oscar for back in 2002. Yet as soon as we see his character and the vision of his perceived view of the Statue of Liberty then cutting to the opening credits. I then knew that this was going to be a delightful artistic take on this period film. This film is a wretched view on an Immigrant life trying to find footing in a country that is supposed to be made of hard work and dreams. His journey is a muck filled agonizing experience that seems to be littered with little happy moments. A Hungarian Jew from Budapest that emigrates to the US because of the Holocaust that has an expertise in architecture. This skill he has is the basis of the plot to where it leads to many roads of distress. Separated from his wife who is stuck in Europe isn’t the primary ordeal to this story. It’s just another overlook of a man who is a troubled person that has flaws and demons he has to contain. While watching this movie I could tell that it was a throwback to an era of film where the format, the screenplay and the intermission between chapters was present. Like a hello kiss from the past of filmmaking. I will not give away the whole plot but I will say that Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce are absolutely strong in their acting in this one. The first act of this film could be classified as a masterpiece. After the intermission it takes a turn that I was not expecting. The Brutalist is a slow burn epic drama that not a lot of average cinema lovers will enjoy. Yet it is profound in what is a behind the scenes experience of a flawed man in a foreign country with devils around him.
