The Penguin – Episode 1

So where do I start? Let’s just say the obvious. Colin Farrell is excellent in this and again unrecognizable as the archetypal adversary Oswald Cobblepot. I’m glad Colin has found a footing in a superhero universe ( please forget the Ben Affleck Daredevil…. please forgive the Ben Affleck Daredevil) OK!! I’m back mentally. What Colin Farrell has done is just immaculate with this character. Finally we get the true gritty character of an iconic villain in the Batman Gotham Universe. Not only that it’s his own series. Yes there is superhero fatigue going on right now but at least MAX and executive producer Matt Reeves are taking a shot. I never thought a show like this would ever come into fruition but it has and I’m ecstatic about it. After The Batman movie with Robert Pattinson I was enticed by the story line and the cinematography of that film. So when I heard The Penguin was being produced as a series I was immediately besotted with that idea. I was drawn to this particular character in that movie because Colin Farrell played him so well. Well enough to catch my interest of the outline into what his past and history was. Let me just say this first episode was a strong starting off point and I did not feel like I was watching a Batman universe series. This was more of a psychological crime drama with a mob plot. The Sopranos in Gotham and yes we are all going to hear that comparison with many others describing this series. We are taking a dive into the underbelly underground dirty world of Gotham. Today is the 34th anniversary to what I claim is the greatest film ever made….. Goodfellas and how delightful this series starts on this date. HBO, MAX whatever you want to call yourself I’m glad you have the cojones to do a project like this and give DC its proper due. Especially after all the crap that has been coming out lately…..don’t worry ….. don’t worry the MCU is in this conversation also. Good job guys and hats off to Colin Farrell. Good first episode!!
